Barton Hills Gathering House

This thoughtful Barton Hills renovation breathed new life into a well-loved 1964 ranch home. The vision was clear: preserving the original character while reimagining it for a growing family. Years of settling, water intrusion, and deferred maintenance had left the home in need of both structural repair and renewed vision, but beneath it all remained the quiet charm of its mid-century roots. The design focused on opening the home to light and connection — raising ceilings, improving flow, and creating spaces that feel warm, airy, and deeply lived in. Inspired by a blend of Southwestern influences and the natural textures of Northern California, the palette layers plaster walls, wood ceilings, and terracotta tile to create a home that feels both grounded and sunlit.

Throughout the project, original elements were thoughtfully honored and reinterpreted for modern living. An existing brick oven and cooktop became a defining focal point, rebuilt with a softened plaster arch that feels timeless yet fresh. Careful structural coordination allowed the living spaces to open seamlessly into a generous screened porch designed for gathering, game days, and long evenings with family and friends — all while preserving the flow of natural light into the heart of the home. The result is a renovation that balances history and livability with warmth, texture, and an enduring sense of home.
